Frequently Asked Questions

What is women’s health physiotherapy?
Women’s health physiotherapy focuses on treating conditions specific to the female body, particularly related to the pelvic floor, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and menopause. It aims to improve function, reduce pain, and support overall wellbeing at every life stage.

What is included in a Postnatal MOT?
A Postnatal MOT is a comprehensive assessment of your body after birth—including your pelvic floor, abdominal muscles (checking for diastasis recti), posture, breathing, and any birth-related concerns. You’ll receive personalised advice and a recovery plan to help you feel your best.

How soon after birth can I come in for treatment?
You can book in from around 6 weeks postpartum. We tailor care to how your body is feeling and always work alongside any medical guidance you’ve received.

What is C-section scar therapy and how does it help?
C-section scar therapy uses gentle, hands-on techniques to reduce tightness, sensitivity, and adhesions around the scar area. It can help improve mobility, ease pain, and support your overall healing.

How can acupuncture help with C-section scar recovery?
Acupuncture supports C-section scar healing by improving blood flow, reducing pain and sensitivity, and helping to soften internal adhesions. It also calms the nervous system, promoting overall recovery and reducing tension around the scar. Used alongside hands-on therapy, acupuncture offers a gentle, effective way to restore function and comfort after surgery.

Can physiotherapy help with pelvic organ prolapse?
Yes. Pelvic health physiotherapy is a first-line treatment for managing prolapse symptoms. We focus on strengthening the pelvic floor, improving posture and breathing mechanics, and guiding you through safe movement strategies to reduce discomfort and pressure.

Is it normal to leak urine after having a baby or during menopause?
While common, urinary incontinence is treatable—you don’t have to manage it alone. Physiotherapy can be highly effective in helping you regain bladder control and confidence through pelvic floor rehabilitation and tailored strategies.

Can you help with symptoms related to menopause?
Absolutely. We support women experiencing pelvic floor weakness, vaginal dryness, discomfort during intimacy, and changes in bladder control or muscle strength during menopause. Treatment is holistic and supportive.

Do I need a referral to see you?
No referral is needed. You can book directly with us. If you’re under medical care, we’re happy to work in collaboration with your GP or specialist.

What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear something comfortable that allows movement. Depending on the assessment area, you may be asked to undress partially, but we always maintain your comfort and privacy throughout.

Is internal pelvic floor assessment always required?
Not always. We’ll discuss your concerns, explain the benefits of internal assessment (if recommended), and only proceed with your full consent. You’re always in control of your care.

What does an internal pelvic floor assessment involve?
An internal assessment allows us to accurately check the strength, tone, and function of your pelvic floor muscles. With your full consent, a trained women’s health physiotherapist will gently insert a gloved, lubricated finger into the vagina to assess how your muscles contract, relax, and coordinate. This helps guide the most effective treatment plan for issues like incontinence, prolapse, or pelvic pain. You are always in control—the assessment is never done without your permission, and we can stop or adjust at any time based on your comfort.
