What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is often seen as a form of complementary medicine used alongside other treatments and is derived from ancient Chinese medicine where needles are inserted into specific points of the body for therapeutic or preventative purposes.
Within our clinics, we practice western acupuncture. Western medical acupuncture is the use of acupuncture following a medical diagnosis. It involves stimulating sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles of the body.
The focus is on producing natural substances, such as pain-relieving endorphins. It’s likely that these naturally released substances are responsible for the beneficial effects experienced with acupuncture.
does it hurt
In terms of managing pain, a course of acupuncture is advised rather than a single treatment.
Acupuncture’s primary purpose is pain relief. It’s designed to help treat migraines and tension headaches as well as neck, shoulder, spine, hip, elbow, hand, knee and foot issues. In association with a comprehensive physiotherapy treatment plan, it can be used to help facilitate movement and function as well as relieve pain.
We also recommend it for certain women’s health issues, including overactive bladder conditions.
